Emma was born in 1838 in Hulme (near Manchester) and her baptism took place on April 22nd, 1838 in St. George (Hulme).¹²

Birth Notes

Emma's father was William Whitaker and her mother was Sarah Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Boardman. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Martha and Ellen. She was the youngest of the eight children.
