Emma was born in 1852 in Warrington and her baptism took place on April 11th, 1852 at St. Elphin (Warrington).1 2  Emma's father was John Mather and her mother was Martha Antwist. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, William, Margaret, Ann and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the six children.
