John, known as Joseph, was born in 1839 in Warrington.1  Joseph's father was John Mather and his mother was Martha Antwist. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Margaret, Ann, Elizabeth and Emma.  He was the second oldest of the six children.

‌Joseph and Mary were married in a religious ceremony in June 1859 in Warrington.2   They had three sons and two daughters, named John, William, James, Annie and Maria.  There are no more children.
