Mary was born in April 1810 in Warrington and her baptism took place on April 26th, 1810 at St. Elphin (Warrington).1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Percival. She had two brothers and a sister, named Peter, Peter and Eliza.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had five half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, Henry, Thomas, William, John, Mary, Ann and Sarah.
