John's father was Peter Jackson and his mother was Sally (Sarah) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah Clare. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Henry, James, Peter, James, Richard, William, Martha, Sarah and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
