William was born in March 1867 in Warrington.1  William's father was John (Joseph) Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Jones.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Martha Antwist. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Annie and Maria.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
