John was born on July 31st, 1811 in Liverpool and his baptism took place on October 11th, 1811 at St. Peter (Liverpool).1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Penketh. He had a brother and five sisters, named Henry, Ann, Hannah, Esther, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the seven known children.
