John was born on July 31st, 1811 in Liverpool and his baptism took place on October 11th, 1811 at St. Peter (Liverpool).1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Penketh. He had four sisters named Hannah, Esther, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five known children.
