Jane lived in Little Bolton to the ripe old age of 80. 1839 Thomas Mather Thomas was with parents John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow St, Little Bolton in 1841 and 1851 1842 Sarah Mather 1844 - 1845 Robert Mather 6m 6m 1847 Nancy Mather Oct 1867, Another Nancy Mather daughter of Hannah married James Bowen at Bolton, St George 1829 - 1851 William Crossland Mather 22 22 In 1841, John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow Street, Little Bolton (and 1851).

In 1841, brothers James and William (14 & 12) were with parents John and Jane at Barlow Street, Little Bolton.  James and William are not their sons they only just married in Oct 1829, and Jane is too young to have them.

1 Jan 1846, William Mather, Striker of Little Bolton, illegitimate,  married Alice Stevenson at St Peter's, Bolton.

In 1847 and 1850, William (a Striker) and Alice had sons named James, before William died in 1851, aged only 22.

In 1851, probably another (?) William Mather (21) is a servant and Druggist in E Bolton for Samuel Chadwich, a doctor of medicine. Betty Mather, another servant (29) is probably unrelated as from Blackrod.

William Crossland Mather left a Will (to be investigated)
 1761 - 1828 Alice Entwistle 67 67 Alice's parents were Thomas and Alice (bap. 1770, Cockey Moore) or William and Susan (bap 1762, Haslingden)

Alice Mather of Bradshaw died April 1828, aged 67.  Either the age has been transcribed incorrectly, or this is not the dasughter of Thomas and Alice so more likely William and Susan. 1788 - 1792 John Mather 4 4 1790 - 1792 Ann Mather 2 2 1792 - 1819 Charles Mather 27 27 Charles Mather does not appear to have married. His burial record describes him as son of Thomas and Alice (no wife referenced). 1796 - 1873 Edward Mather 77 77 The only marriage I can find is in Northumberland.  Seems unlikely, but its all I have!

Edward and Ann had their children baptised at Edgworth Independant.  Edward was a washer (probably in the print industry like his father).

In 1821, son James died aged 2 and buried at Turton. However, their abode was Tottington.

In 1841, Edward and Ann (40 & 45) were at Bottoms, Edgworth (Russsa Bottoms) with George (15), Charles (15), Alice (15) Susannah (13) and Nancy (10)

In 1851, Edward  and Ann (55 & 61) were at Russia Bottoms, Edgworth with Charles (28), Susannah (22), Nancy (17) and g-daughter Mally (5).  Edward's married daugfhter Alice Allen was also living there. 1800 - 1811 James Mather 11 11 1805 - 1861 Thomas Mather 56 56 Thomas cut it fine getting married 6 April 1828.  Thier first baby Alice was born 19 May, the following month.

From 1828, Thomas lived at Turton Bottoms.  Records show Alice and Ann were born there).

In 1841, Thomas (30), a block printer like his father and Hannah (also 30) were at Bottoms, Edgworth.  They had their children baptised at Edgworth Independent.  They had 4 surviving children Alice, Ann, Amos and Jane (13, 9, 6, 3).

In 1851 Thomas & Hannah (both 42) where at the Old Globe Buildings, Turton.  Thomas, born Quarlton was a Gas Maker. They had 8 children: Alice, Ann, Amos, Jane and Thomas, Charles, John, Hannah (22, 18, 16, 12, 10, 6, 3, 9mo).

Thomas died Q1/1861, before the census, aged 52
 1806 - 1871 Hannah (Ann) Kirkham 65 65 In 1851, Hannah (wife) and same age as Thomas.  Not Hannah Whitehead, as they were from Manchester town.  Probably Ann or Anna, as many of the baptism records show her as Ann

In 1861 Hannah (52, Head) at Old School, Turton with 5 children and 4 grandchildren.

In 1871, Hannah Mather (66, Head) is with Jane (30, Dau), John (22, Son), and grandchildren Alice (16) and Thomas (8). She is Married but was a Widow in 1861

In 1891, Hannah and family are neighbours of George and Ann Mather. 1789 - 1870 Ann Brambley 81 81 1825 Alice Mather 5 July 1846, John "Alen", illegitimate of Edgworth married Alice Mather, daughter of Edward Mather, a dyer.
. 1827 - 1827 Susannah Mather 1829 - >1911 Susannah Mather 82 82 Susannah Mather of Edgworth, spinner, had a son Joseph baptised 9 April 1854 at Turton.  She would have been about 25.  This Susanah lived with her parents into her fourties., unmarried, although seems to have had two children, Joseph and Margaret Ann (born 1857).

In 1911 Susannah Mather (83) "Mother" and "Single" is living with her son Joseph (57) and extended family at Edgworth. 1832 Nancy Mather 1828 - 1915 Alice Mather 86 86 Mother "Ann"

Alice was still unmarried in 1861, living with mother Hannah and all surviving siblings, the oldest Alice aged 32.  However, there were 4 grandchildren present (oldest born 1852) that must be Alice or Ann's.

After her parents died, Alice Mather became head of the family, and as such was witness to youngest brother John's marriage of 1874

In 1871, Alice (43) was married to Ralph Entwistle (37) and had 4 of his children with them as well as Annie (1) and Walter (3mo) of her own.  Sarah (15) is probably also hers as was not with Ralph in 1861.

In 1881, Alice (52, born Turton Bottoms) and Ralph (47) were at 17 Barber Street, Sharples with her extended family.

In 1911, Alice (82) was with her children Annie and Walther (41 and 40) and Also "daughter" Sarah Mather (55) and her daughter Sarah Alice (31).

Alice died in 1915, aged 86 1832 Ann Mather Ann may have had a son Joseph (aged 3 in 1861). 

In 1861, George Warburton (24) was living with his mother Hannah (78) at Old School, Turton. A few doors away lived Ann Mather (28)

In Q3 1863, Ann Mather married George Warburton at Bolton RO.

In 1871 George and Ann Warburton (36 & 37) are at Egerton with Betsy (7) and RObert (5).  Joseph Mather (15) was with them. 1830 - ~1840 John Mather 10 10 1835 - 1884 Amos Mather 48 48 NOTE:  There is another Amos Mather, born Turton, Manager Bleaching, who was married to Ann Briggs, both 53 in 1891 living at 343 Blackburn Road..

This is first known occurance of an Amos Mather!  Another Amos, son of William and Peggy Mather, born 1842 (who also had Zephaniah) married Margaret Howarth at Mellor in 1870. 

Amos died 1884 and is shown as deceased on all of his childrens marriages.

In 1891, Amos Mather's family are neighbours of George and Ann Mather.  Are they related? 1824 Charles Mather NOTE: There is also a Henry Mather and Deborah Cromption family, married 1862 at Deane (and also Peter Mather and Ann Cromption family, married 1874 in Bolton).

In 1846, Charles was witness to his sister Ann's marriage to John Allen

In 1861, Charles Mather married Betty Crompton (8 years younger) and were later visiting his parents in Edgworth.

In 1861, Charles was a Fire Beater in Turton when Rachel was baptised. 
About 1875 the family moved to Little Bolton (and son Charles was born there in 1877)

In 1881, Charles and Betty (52 & 42) and family were at 202 Waterloo St, Little Bolton. Charles was a fireman. 1819 - 1821 James Mather 2 2 James, the first son was born will the family were at Quarlton.  This confirms the correct family, as Edward's father was a Printer in Quarlton.

James, son of Edward and Ann of Tottington, 2 years, was buried March 2 1821 at Turton St Ann. 1846 Amelia (Mally) Mather Mally born illieitimate, Q1/1846 was aged 5 in 1851

Amelia (Mally) was an Adopted granddaughter of Edward and Ann.  In 1861, she was described as daughter, aged 15.

 1833 Mary Mather Mary Leser, daughter, was with mother Jane Mather in 1891.
Hhe had a daughter Catherine (aged 16 in 1891).

On 23 Sep 1860, Mary Mather of Little Bolton, daughter of John Mather a weaver married Edmund Lever a joiner and widower of Little Bolton.

Edmund died in 1885.

In 1891, after Mary's husbad Edmund had died, Mary Lever was back living with her mother Jane Mather at 17 Oliver Row 1850 Jane Mather The "twins", Esther and Jane age 1 in 1851 survived infancy as both were alive aged 11 with their parents in 1861. However, there is no birth registration for such twins. Esther is registered in 1849, and Jane appears to be illegitimate, registered in 1850.

In 1861, Jane is shown to be a granddaughter, aged 11, living at Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

18 Jan 1868 Jane Mather, a minor, daughter of John Mather a weaver of Barlow Street married Richard Knowles at St Peter, Bolton.  They had Lucy in 1870 who died an infant.


 1834 - 1836 John Mather 1 1 1803 - 1873 Richard Mather 70 70 2 Jan 1826, Richard Mather and Mary married the same day as William Mather & Betty Fairview. A double marriage!  Also, Joseph Mather married Sarah Rosthorn later the same year.

Dyer in 1826 (when John baptised), a blue dyer in 1841, a reel dyer (of cotton) in 1851, labourer at the Calico print works in 1861 and 1871.

Another Richard and Mary family had Hannah (in 1826) and Ellen (b. 1828). This Richard was a Fuller.

In 1841, Richard and Mary (both 35) were at Pilton Fold, Edgworth with John, Alice, Sarah, Richard and Mary (15,15,13,5 & 2) 1802 - 1882 Mary Rostron 80 80 1826 John Mather 1831 - >1881 Alice Mather 50 50 1835 - 1902 Richard Mather 66 66 Richard Mather married Betty Booth 15 Dec 1861.  His witness was Amos Mather but which Amos?  Richard didnt have a brother Amos. 1838 Mary Mather In 1841, Mary Mather (2) was a Pelton Fold, Quarlton with parents and siblings. 1841 Martha Mather Martha, unmarried, was with both parents in 1871 (so not married to Henry)

In 1871, Martha (unmarried, 26, born Quarlton) and living with parents at Pelton Fold had Richard (8) and Sarah Jane (5).

In 1881, Martha (36, born Quarlton) was Head at Turton Bottoms. She was unmarried, a Rag Picker at the Paper Mill, but had three children, Richard, Elizabeth Ellen and George (17, 3, & 9 mo). She should be 40, so could be wrong Martha 1831 - 1891 Sarah Mather 60 60 13 in 1841

In 1851, Sarah Mather (20, b.Quarlton) was a lodger at Gate House, Bradshaw Roas, Bradshaw with William Haslam (65) a Toll Collector.

In 1871, Andrew and Sarah (54 & 40) were at Hollins Cottage, Quarlton with Charles (16), Peter (14) and George (2). Also present was Mary Haslam (W, 74, Mother-in-law, Housekeeper).

In 1891, Sarah (59) was at 333 Bury Road, Quarlton with sons Peter (37) and George (22).
 1794 - 1874 John Mather 79 79 John was quite an important person, being an overlooker at the Looms.

In 1841 John (40, Overlooker, looms) & Jane (30) were with family James (14), William (12), Mary (10), John (7), Thomas (2) at Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

In 1851, John and Jane (52 & 39)  are still at 12 Barlow Street, Little Bolton with 7 children.

In 1861, John and Jane are at 24 Barlow Street with daughters Sarah (20) and Esther (11), and grandchildren Jane (11) and John (7).

In 1868, Jane Mather, a minor, daughter of John Mather a weaver from Barlow Street married Richard knowles. Also that year Joseph Marther Orrell, son of John Orrel a Cotton Carder of Barlow Street married Mary Garthside. (They are probably related, although John had no sisters.  Quite likely John Orrell was John's illegitimate son with Martha Orrell).

In 1871 John was at 22 Base St, Little Bolton (75) with Wife Jane (63) and Grandson John (17).

We can be sure he was from Edgworth, born about 1794-1798, as census records vary.  Possibly John born 1794 (if 1861 census is correct), so likely the son of Thomas a Calco Printer and Alice from Quarlton (0.5km south of Edgworth). The son of a printer becoming an overlooker at the looms is quite likely, but by no means certain. 1838 - 1914 Jane Mather 75 75 In 1871, Jane (30, Dau, Unmarried) was a cotton operative living with her mother Hannah (66), brother John (21) and two children (possibly hers).

In 1891, Jane (50) is Head and "Wid" at 7 Warburton Fold, Turton

Dont confuse with Jane Mather nee Kay, wife of Amos, who was born Entwistle in 1836. 1841 - 1864 Thomas Mather 22 22 Thomas was 10 in 1851 and 19 in 1861 but missing after that. Thomas died in 1864, aged 22

Before he died in April, Thomas may have married.  There are 3 Bolton marriages for a Thomas Mather in 1864, but is unlikely even if he did marry, he had any children. 1844 - 1932 Charles Mather 88 88 22 May 1869, Charles Mather, Stripper & Grinder, son of Thomas Mather a Gas Maker, married Ann Dewhust, Daughter of William, a Quarryman  Married 41 years in 1911 and all births show Ann's maiden name as Dewhurst.

Thomas and Charles had left home by 1871.  Charles (27) was married to Ann (23), and had a baby daughter Mary A (1) in Egerton.

In 1901, Charles and Ann (both 55) were at Farnworth with Mary A (30), Elizabeth (28), Henry (25), Edmund (19), Robert (16) and Samuel Finner, a boarer.

In 1911, Charles (65, Wid) at 34 Rishton, Great Lever with Mary Ann (40), Margaret Elizabeth (38) and William Henry (35, married). Charles had 5 children (all alive)

Charles probably retired to Blackpol where he died in 1932, aged 88 (or earlier in Bolton) 1850 - 1932 Elizabeth Naylor 82 82 Elizabeth's father was John Naylor. a spinner. Census records show she was born in Over Darwen. The 1871 census shows her parents were John from Preston and Mary from Wigan. If this is right, then she was born 2 May 1850 and baptised 15 May 1850 at Blackburn.

In 1874, Elizabeth married John Mather. Her witness was James Naylor (her closest brother, b 1854).

In 1881, John and Elizth (29 & 28) were living at 13 Cox Green Road with their son Arthur (2).

In 1901, John and Elizabeth (52 & 50) and their family were at 25 Hough Lane, Eagley (Turton).

In 1911, John and Elizabeth (62 & 59), son James (21)  and her married daughter Annie were living at 8 Myrrh Street, Little Bolton.

Elizabeth probably died in Little Bolton in 1919 (aged 65), or 1932 (aged 81). 1863 Charles Mather Charles married Nancy Thomasson on 13 Aug 1891. 1865 Mary Jane Mather Mary J, aged 6 in 1871 and Jane in 16 in 1881, so probably known most commonly as Jane.

Mary James Mather married George Entwistle on 5 May 1888 at Walmsley 1868 Hannah (Anne) Mather Anne, aged 3 in 1871, but later known as Hannah (13 in 1881).

Hannah married Charles Corless 12 June 1897 at Walmslet Christ Church 1871 Margaret (Maggie) Mather 1874 Thomas Mather Thomas married Elizabeth Baxendale (RO).  They had been married 8 years in 1911, with two children, Phyllis and Alice.

Elizabeth may have been a widow, previously married to Thomas Baxendale from Chorley (TBC). 1877 Alice Mather Alice married Joseph Waddicar at Walmsley Christ Church on 3 Dec 1896, and they had one daughter Annie, aged 14 in 1911.

Hannah Mather, Alice's mother was living with them in 1911. 1879 Sarah Mather Sarah married George Crowther from Edgworth, 4 Feb 1882 at Walmsley Christ Church. 1882 - 1961 Amos Mather 79 79 In 1921, Amos was a boarder with Mrs Martha Nuttall at Edgworth, Turton and working as a Stone workers labourer at Cox Green, Dunscar.

In 1939, Amos was single, a Quarry Labourer, living at 15 Chapel Street, Bolton 1884 Elizabeth Mather Elizabeth never knew her father, who died around the same time she was born.

Elizabeth married William Handel Garbelt at Walmsley Christ Church 12 Aug 1908 1766 - 1842 Thomas Mather 76 76 The Thomas, son of Joshua and Margaret is another from Walton-le-Dale.  That Thomas married Jenny Rigby.

Thomas probably has a sister Betty Mather who married John Isherwood in 1791.  They also had a family at Quarlton.

Possibly brother of Robert Mather, b.about 1766 who had a son Lambert Mather. 

There seems to be no 1841 Turton census record for Thomas, yet he died in 1842 and is buried at St. Anne's. Perhaps he was the 70y old Shoe Maker, retired at Walton-le-Dale yet burial says of Edgworth

We can tell from the burial record, Mary Ellen Fish died 1897, aged 29 and is buried with her parents. 1870 John Mather 1871 - 1955 Lambert Booth Mather 83 83 Lambert Booth married Edna.  When he died in 1955 he had an estate worth £7,339. 1875 John Mather 1833 - 1838 Martha Mather 5 5 1895 Herbert Longworth In 1939, Ethel A and Herbert Longworth were at 11 Southgrove Avenue, Bolton.  Herbert was a shop assistant at the grocers.  They appear to have had a child with them. 1863 Clara Scott In 1901, Clara and John J Mather was at 17 Blackbank Street, Little Bolton with 2 children and Clara's mother Alice Scott. 1897 - 1983 Ethel Alice Mather 85 85 In 1939, Ethel A and Herbert Longworth were at 11 Southgrove Avenue, Bolton.  They had one other (child) with them.

In 1922, Ethel married Herbert Longworth at Seymour Road Wesleyan Chapel, Astley Bridge.  She is one of several Mathers to marry there, but this Ethel is not closely related to the others. 1899 George Edward Mather 1902 Harry Mather 1821 George Mather George is the son of Edward Mather, a Crofter and Ann.

In 1871, George and Hannah (52 & 51) were at Edgworth with daughter Mary Hannah Mather (aged 9) 1883 - 1920 Ernest Mather 36 36 In 1883 there are 4 Ernest Mather births (Lancashire BMD) and the one birth in Turton fits Little Bolton where Ernest married and had his family.  Ernest is 1 of 8 birth records for MATHER and NAYLOR, all from Turton (1875-90).

In 1907, Ernest Mather (a minder) of 62 Rawsthorne Street, son of John (a frame tenter) and Marry Ann were at 4 Acton Street when son Ernest was baptised.

Ernest and Mary Ann Sinker married in 1907.  Ernest's father was John, a Frame Tenmter. Ernest was from 62 Rawsthorn Street (near All Souls).  He had moved to 10 Myrrh Street (a 5 min walk) by the time Alice was baptised in 1911.

On 3 July 1913 Ernest and Mary Ann had twins Herbert and Joseph.  They were still at 10 Myrrh Street and Ernest was a Side Piecer.

In 1911, Ernest and Mary Ann (28 & 24) had been married 4 years and had one child that died. They were living at 10 Myrrh Street, Little Bolton.

In 1920, Ernest died in Halliwell, aged 36 1887 Mary Ann Sinker Mary Ann's parents were William Henry Sinker and Mary Ann Clegg.   In 1887 they lived at 32 Acton Street, Halliwell when Mary Ann was baptised. 

In 1907, after they marredi and when Ernest was baptised, the family had moved down the road to 4 Acton Street.

Edward died young (36) in 1920 so Mary may have re-married. There is a marriage of Mary A Mather to David Lythgoe at St Thomas, Halliwell in 1923 that fits well. 1907 - 1907 Ernest Mather 1911 - 1967 Alice Mather 56 56 Possible MATHER DNA connection, but could also be HOWARTH, HASLAM and LOMAX.  No shared DNA matches. 1913 - 1917 Herbert Mather 3 3 Herbert was bon 3 July 1913, so it should be possible to find him on the 1939 register, but he is missing, presumed dead?

In 1917, Herbert may have died SW Bolton aged 3. 1913 Joseph Mather Herbert and Joseph were twins, the births registered together (adjacent record numbers) in 1913 at Little Bolton.

In 1881, John (an under carder, born Turton) and Elizabeth (29 & 28) were living at 13 Cox Green Road, Walmsley, Turton with son Arthur (2).

In 1901, John and Elizabeth (52 & 50) were living at 52 Hough Lane, Eagley with Arthur (22), Ernest (18), John (17), Annie (15) and James (11). John was a Cotton Card Loom Hand.

In 1907 the family were living at 62 Rawsthorn Street (near All Souls). Ernest and Hannah both recorded this as their address when they both married.

In 1911, John & Elizabeth (62 & 59) had son James (21) and daughter Annie Woodward (25), living at Myrrrh Street, Little Bolton.

John died in 1922, aged 74 1850 Hannah Mather Hannah was Illegitimate (on marriage record)

In 1851, Hannah was recorded as daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, 9 mo. However the birth record does not name the father.  In 1861, Hannah is shown as a granddaughter, aged 9, so is most likely an illegitimate daughter of one of their under-aged daughters, probably Alice (else Ann), and brought up by her grandparents.

In 1870 Hannah married Samuel son of John Naylor at Walmsley. The marriage record confirms Hannah was illegitimate.

In 1874, Hannah's brother John married Elizabeth Naylor. This may be Samuel Naylor's sister (TBC).

In 1871, Samuel and Hannah Naylor (both 22) are at Higher End, Little Bolton.

In 1861, Ralph (26) was married to Betty (33) and had daughters Margaret (6) and Jane (1). They were in a private house in Middleton and also had 3 boarders.

In 1871, Ralph and Alice (37 & 43) were at Egerton, Turton with Margaret (16), Jane (11), Sarah (15), Mary A (8), Anne (1) and Walter (3mo).  The births are out of order suggesting some mat be step-daughters.  Only Annie and Walter are from the current marriage to Alice Mather (married 1868). 1855 Sarah Mather In 1871, Sarah was not with Ralph. She is probably an illegitimate daughter of Alice, and with her in 1881.

On 1 Jan 1876, John Mather (22), a grinder from Barlow Street, son of John (dec.) married Eliza Horrobin (21), the girl next door, dau of James (dec).  They were living at 21 and 23 Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

On 1 Jan 1876, John, a grinder, son of John (his adoptive grandparent) married Eliza Horrobin at Bolton St Peter. Jophn and Eliza were at 21 and 23 Barlow Street (where he was in 1861)

In 1881, John, a stripper and grinder, and Eliza (both 26) were at 1 Bailey Street, Halliwell with daughters Mary E (4) and Jane (1). Eliza's brother (tbc) Samuel Horrobin (31) was a boarder. 1849 Esther Mather The "twins", Ester and Jane age 1 in 1851 survived infancy as both were alive aged 11 with their parents in 1861. However, there is no birth registration for such twins. Esther is registered in 1849, and Jane appears to be illegitimate, registered in 1850.

On 29 June 1868, Esther Mather married a very old William Archer. In 1871, Esther was 21 and William 59 and they had two daughters Esther (4) and Lucy (2).. William was an employer of 3 men and 2 boys.

On 9 Feb 1875, Esther Archer (25, Wid), daughter of John Mather, married Thomas Larkin 1866 - >1939 John James Mather 73 73 John was the son of Charles Mather and Betty Crompton

In 1901, John J Mather was at 17 Blackbank Street, Little Bolton with 2 children and his mother-in-law Alice Scott, and the same John J Mather (born 21 Jan 66) was still there in 1939 with Mary Schofield (born 18 Nov 81 and Single). 1837 - >1911 Hannah Hullock 74 74 In 1891, Hannah Mather (nee Hullock) is a neighbour of George and Ann Mather 1824 John Allen John was illegitimate daughter of Rebecca Allne.

5 July 1846, John "Alen", illegitimate of Edgworth married Alice Mather, daughter of Edward Mather, a dyer.

1848-52, The family were at Edgworth (when Edward and William born).  Later births were registered at Turton.

In 1851, Edward and Alice (26 & 25) were at Russia Bottoms, Edgworth with Edward (3) and Mary Ann (3 mo)

 1817 - 1843 John Mather Orrell 26 26 John Mather Orrell was an illegitimate child, the son of Martha Orrell of Great Bolton, and the father assumed to be a Mather, possibly John Mather of Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

Born Halliwell, John's marriage witness, was from Blackburn Street, Little Bolton, son of Thomas Halliwell, a spade labourer.

John must have died in 1843, as Martha was a widow in 1851 and this is the only young adult death (and had middle initial M).  Therefore the later children with Martha in 1851 must be illegitimate. 1821 Martha Gradwell Martha lived in West Bolton and moved to Little Bolton after John died, about 1846 and before Ellen was born.

In 1851, Martha, aged 30 was a widow at 28 Back Lever Street, Little Bolton with children Joseph (8), Martha (6) and Ellen (3).

In 1861, Martha (41, W) was living with Philip Greenhalgh (68, Wid, Sapde Labourer) at 3 Morris Street, Little Bolton, and with them Joseph (18), Martha (16), Ellen (13) and Christopher (9). 1844 - 1888 Martha Orrell 44 44 In 1864, Martha Orrell married Charles Dunn (Irish) at Bolton RO.

In 1871, Charles and Martha (30 & 26) were at 1 Smithy Street, Little Bolton and had Joseph (3) and Elizabeth (3mo)

In 1911 Christopher and Esther Ann (59 & 56) were at 26 Thorne St, Little Bolton. 1793 Philip Greenhalgh Philip was living with Martha Orrell in 1861, and Ellen and Christopher (son and dau) are likely to be his children. ~1868 John William Fish 1853 - 1932 Charles Mather 79 79 In 1853, Charles was an illegitimate son, born Quarlton.

In 1871, Charles "Waddicor" (17) and brother Peter (15) were with parents Andrew and Sarah Waddicore (54 & 40).

Charles Mather and Maria Hough married in 1876 and lived at Edgworth.  They had a girl and boy die as infants (un-named) in 1881 and 1882 before Andrew in 1884 who also died an infant.

In 1891, Sarah (59) was at 333 Bury Road, Quarlton with sons Peter (37) and George (22).

In 1939, brothers Fred+Mary and Albert+Jane Mather were neighbours at 835 and 837 Higher Bradshaw Road, Turton 1859 - 1907 Margaret Ann Mather 48 48 Susannah Mather of Edgworth,. a piecer, had Margaret Ann baptised 26 March 1860.  This must be the daughter of Susannah (b.1829), as there is no other Susannah Mather alive at this time.  She also had Joseph in 1854.

In 1891, Henry and Clara (both 28) were with Eva J and Charles.  They went on to have 6 more children (8 in total), all born in Little Bolton.

Alice and William, a "Striker", had two sons James in 1847 and 1850.  In 1847, the MMN is shown as STEPHENSON, but there is no matching Bolton birth record in 1850.

In 1881, Joseph Warburton (26, unmarried), a Carter was living with his parents at 2 School Court.

In 1881, Joseph Warburton (illegitimate son of Ann Mather) was a carter, living with his parents George and Ann Warburton at 2 School Court, Turton.  John and Jane Warburton and their son William were living at 4 School Court.

15 Dec 1888, Joseph Mather (30), a stoker, married Elizabeth (Eliza) Warburton at Walmsley Christ Church

In 1891, Joseph and Eliza (32 & 31) were at 4 School Court, Turton with son Robert (2).

In 1901, Joseph and Eliza (both 42) were at 4 School Court, Turton with son Robert (2).

In 1911, Joseph Mather, a fireman at the Bleach works had been married to Elizabeth 22 years and had 1 child (still alive).  Both were 52, living at 4 School Court, Egerton. 1864 Betsy Warburton 1866 Robert Warburton 1874 George Warburton 1876 Jane Warburton 1835 - 1902 John Mather 67 67 It appears that John was an orphan, so with no family he joined the Army.

In 1841, John Mather (3) was living with Thomas Kay (20) and others at Cross Street, East Bolton with Robert and Mary Skelmerdine (both 65) as head. This may be another younger person.

In 1851, John Mather (16) was living at Barlow Street, Little Bolton with parents John (an overlooker) and Jane Mather.  This may be him!

From 1863 to 1866 John, 4721 Private, was in the 50th Queens Own Regiment serving in New Zealand. In 1869 hewas awarded a New Zealand Campaign Medal for his part (as a Private) in the WarRats and West Coast Campaign from Nov 1863 to Sep 1866.


In 1871, John (36), born Bolton was a sergeant in the 50th Queens Own Regiment of Infantry at Frimley, Aldreshot with wife Catherine (33, born Ireland) and step-children Margaret and Edward Murphy (9 & 7) born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

John received his discharge from the army just prior to Catherine's death. He was discharged 8th April 1874. age 39. His intended residence at time of discharge was  Kingston upon Thames.

Q4 1877 John married Martha Brierly at Bolton RO.  They were widow and widower.

In 1881, John and Martha (45 & 25) were at 29 Bury Old Road, Haulgh (Lane Ends area) with their son J R Mather (12mo).

In 1891, John and Martha (53 & 40) were at 4 Back Mill Street, Little Bolton with 5 children.

8 Mar 1791, James Isherwood was witness to John's marriage to Betty Mather.  Following their marriage they lived in Quarlton, Turton.  16 Apr, when son James was baptised, John was a weaver and pauper.

In 1798 (brother) Robert and Betty of Quarlton also had a daughter Mally.

In 1807 and 1810, John was a weaver in Edgworth (so possibly another)

There are also England Select baptism records for the children at Tottington (although the text shows otherwise).

NOTE: There is another John & Betty Isherwood family from Tottington (who had Peggy (died), James in 1796 and Betty in 1804). 1807 & 1810, daughters Alice and Susan were born at Tottington and baptised at St Ann's, Turton. In 1911, Alice "Baxter" (55)  was at 34 Phoenix Street, Bolton with Edward (32), Annie (27), Ada (25) and Bertha Unsworth (22).  Also, Frank & Harry Baxter (16 & 13) and Grandson John Unsworth (5) 1785 Mary Mather There are 7 possible Bolton marriages of Mary Mather from 1804 to 1824. Assuming she stayed in the area and buried at Turton, only one of these Marys is a match, the marriage to James Lee in 1823.  Howver is is another couple born about 1800.

15 Jul 1810, Mary Mather married John Haslam a weaver.  They had a son William in 1814, but after that there were 5 more marriaged of John Haslam to a Mary.

In 1812, Ann Haslam was baptised, daughter of John and Mary Ann.

In 1819, Mary's borther Charles died aged 27, so her next son born 1823 was named after him.

In 1841, John a Dyer and Mary Haslam (50 & 55) were at Bottom, Edgworth with William (25), Thomas (15) and Isaac (14)

By 1851, John had died and Mary Haslam (66) was a Widow at Russia Bottom, Edgworth with Thomas (24) and Isaac (22).  The census shows she was born at Quarlton (near Edgworth) 1897 Jessie Hobson In 1922, Jessie Hobson (25), a Book Keeper (Steel Works), Spinster, 3 Thorn Street, Bolton married Norman Mather 1827 - 1875 James Mather 48 48 James and William were baptised in Bolton, the sons of William Mather and Martha (Bleakley).  They came from a prosporus background and were professional people.  William was an Attorney of Law, who died in 1835.  His wife Martha remarried in 1838, so the boys probably went into service.  James became a druggist.

In 1841, James and William (14 & 12) were not with their parents.  Instead, they were with John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow Street, Little Bolton whom had just married in Oct 1829 (so too young to be their parents).  They may be adopted by John, a relative.

In 1851, James is not with the family and may may have married Mary Stott at Deane in 1851, but there are no possible Bolton marriages.

James son of John Mather is possibly the son James (14) of John and Jane at Burton Street, Little Bolton in 1841.

21 Nov 1852, James Mather (24), son of John a weaver married Elizabeth Broom (21) at St Thomas, Heaton Norris.

In 1861, James and Elizabeth (30 & 27) were living at Lum Street, Bolton with Nancy (3) and John Thomas (2)

In 1871, James from Cheshire and Betsy (43 & 38) were at 1 Morris Street, Little Bolton with Nancy (14), John (13), Charles (10) and Elizabeth (1).

In 1881, Wife Elizabeth Mather (47, Head, married) was still at 58 Lum Street, Bolton with John, Charles and Elizabeth and three boarders  Had James left her?

This appears to be the Elizabeth, daughter of John Allen and Alice Mather except their daughter was born at Bradshaw and was with them in 1861.  Also, Alice didnt have a sister Sarah.  Therefore, Elizabeth must be the daughter of Peter Allen and Alice Heys.
