Ellen's father was John Haslam and her mother was Mary Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Thomas, William, Sarah and Mary. She had an adopted brother named Thomas. She had two half-sisters named Ann and Elizabeth.  John Haslam adopted Ann and Elizabeth.  She died at the age of 49 in December 1902 in Bolton.²
