Ellen's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Mary Helm. Her paternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Martha (Matty) Ramsden. She had two sisters named Ann and Jane. She was the oldest of the three children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named James, Solomon, Joseph, Richard, William, Ellen and Martha.
