Joseph was born on January 16th, 1806 at Hall-i’th’-Wood and his baptism took place on January 27th, 1806 in Dukes Alley Chapel (NC).1  Joseph's father was Solomon Mather and his mother was Martha (Matty) Ramsden.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Howarth. He had two brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named James, Solomon, Betty, Sarah, Mary, Catherine, Ann and <child>.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 73 in 1879 in Sharples.  He was buried on January 15th, 1879 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).2 3

‌Joseph and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on May 7th, 1826 at St. Peter's (Bolton).7   They had four sons and two daughters, named James, Solomon, Joseph, Richard, Ellen and Martha.  There are no more children.

Joseph's second family with Mary Helm

‌Joseph and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on June 9th, 1844 in Radcliffe by Nathaniel Milne and witnessed by Thomas Ribley & Robert Barlow.6  They had three daughters named Ellen, Ann and Jane.  There are no more children.
