James was born in 1831 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on January 5th, 1831 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  James' father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Sarah Rostron.  His paternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Martha (Matty) Ramsden. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Solomon, Joseph, Richard, William, Ellen and Martha.  He was the oldest of the seven children. He had three half-sisters named Ellen, Ann and Jane.  He died at the age of 28 on March 12th, 1859 in Bolton.  He was buried in March 1859 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).3

‌James and Ann were married in a religious ceremony on April 16th, 1854 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by Curate William Booker and witnessed by John Crook & John Blackley.5  They had a daughter named Elizabeth.  There are no more children.
