James' father was William Brindle and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom. He had a brother and three sisters, named Robert, Bertha, Maggie and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five known children.  He died at the age of 4 in December 1891 in Bolton.²
