Bertha's father was William Brindle and her mother was Elizabeth Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, Maggie and Elizabeth. She was the third oldest of the five known children. She died at 3 months old in September 1892 in Little Bolton.²
