Robert's father was William Brindle and his mother was Elizabeth Mather. His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Bertha, Maggie and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the five known children. He died at the age of 6 in October 1897 in Little Bolton.²
