Martha's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Bleakley.  John Mather and Jane Welsby were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Charles, Henry, Nancy and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 1 in February 1857 in Bolton.¹
