Thomas' father was John Haslam and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Charles, Isaac, Ann and Ellen.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
