John was born in 1892 in Halliwell.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Eliza Horrobin.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Mary Mather.  John Mather and Jane Welsby were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, James, Harry, Mary, Eliza, Jane, Sarah and Ada.  He died at the age of 1 in 1893 in Halliwell.1
