John's father was John Mather and his mother was Eliza Horrobin. His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Mary Mather. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, James, Harry, Mary, Eliza, Jane, Sarah and Ada. He died at the age of 1 in 1893 in Halliwell.¹
