Mary was born in 1833 in Preston.1 Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Jane Welsby. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Robert, Daniel, Henry, Sarah, Nancy and Esther. She had three adopted brothers and an adopted sister, named John, William, James and Jane. She had a half-brother named John.General Notes

Hhe had a daughter Catherine (aged 16 in 1891).
On 23 Sep 1860, Mary Mather of Little Bolton, daughter of John Mather a weaver married Edmund Lever a joiner and widower of Little Bolton.
Edmund died in 1885.
In 1891, after Mary's husbad Edmund had died, Mary Lever was back living with her mother Jane Mather at 17 Oliver Row
