Henry's father was John Mather and his mother was Jane Welsby.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Robert, Daniel, Mary, Sarah, Nancy and Esther. He had three adopted brothers and an adopted sister, named John, William, James and Jane. He had a half-brother named John.
