Ernest's father was John Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Joynson. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, Charles, Fred and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the five known children.
