Ralph (Radnlphi or Radi) Mather from Middle Hulton, Shackerley (by Tyldesley and Atherton) There are 4 Ralph Mather families here. Astley; G.B. and Shackerley. Samuel & Margareta gemini (i.e. twins) were baptised 28 Feb 1674, who cant be a brother and sister so we have two families here; Both John Mather, from Kearsley (this) and Middle Hulton (other). John Mather's family from Little Hulton A coal mining family from Pendleton (1841) or Little Hulton (1851,1861 census) Also See MATHER, William & Martha from Mather's Fold (Eccles and Little Hulton) James Mather of Little Hulton, Collier & Soldier. Son James also a soldier. Baptisms at Ringley Betty Mather b.1815, Worsley Unmarried family from Dun Kirk, Little Hulton in 1851 Betsy and Thomas Grundy, born 1844 and 1848 are children of James Grundy & Elizabeth Mather of Mather Fold nr Worsley Robert Mather of Worsley There are 2+ MATHER+WOLDENDALE families in Farnworth No DNA match Ralph Mather born Harwood (others from Hulton) Also in 1777, Thomas Mather married Abigail Banks (1753-1815) at Winwick. Possibly related with ADAM and RALPH names All baptised with father Thomas (i.e. no mother named) of Little Hulton Baptisms at Peel Chapel by Bolton, Parish of Deane. See also Thomas Mather & Margaret Barlow (married 1765 at Deane) Because the first daughter is Catherine it is assumed that this is Thomas's sister There is also a Thomas and Betty Mather family of Horwich (who had John baptised 13 Dec 1761) James Smith (MyHeritage) has this family and a 3x g-grandson of William Jarvis. He has a 33.2 cM DNA match (highest with a Mather connection, but very distant. His tree is not consistant with the records. FindaGrave has Mary's parents as Geoffrey & Ann. There are Warrington births for Mary, dau of Joseph Mather a gardener and Margaret and Marjory his wife (so two Josephs), but not for 1755. Another Johannis family from Kearsley. Note: Cant be the same family as conflicting births in 1674 Baptised children of John Lever and Betty 1837 BMD birth for Mary shows MMN = MATHER. However, no marriage There is also Thomas Mather and Betty Flitcroft of Little Hulton Married 20 Nov 1764 Parent Parent Biological Child Biological Child Parent Biological Child Biological Child Therefore, John and William are possible cousins (not brothers as marriage records show different fathers) Lives with: Sarah had her mother (Shown as Henry's Mother-in-Law) with her in 1851 Relative of: Alice Mort Toppings was Henry's mother (shown on grave)

In 1851 Alice Toppings (84, Mother in Law) was living with Henry Relative of: Possible brothers or cousins from Middle Hulton Relative of: There is a record at Bolton archivers pertaining to "Apprenticeship Indenture - William, son of Ralph Mather of Middle Hulton to Thomas Morris of Great Bolton, weaver, date 27 Feb 1764". This is probably this William (aged 12) and orphaned.
Named After Lives with: Ann never married. In 1871, Ann (55) was living with her Brother ans sister-in-law Hugh and Alice Mather at Farnworth Neighbor: Neighbours in 1881 Lives with: In 1891 James Henry (15) was living with his uncle James and mary Eckersley. Relative of: Illegitimate Daughter Named After 1742 James Mather There are several James Mather records for Dean and surrounding neighbourhood in 1743.  However, by only looking at the christening index on Batch Number P005891, there is only one, son of Ralph. ~1695 - 1753 Ralph Mather 58 58 After Ralph married Margaet in 1720, they initially lived in Over Ollton (where James was born), before moving back to Astley in Leigh.

Ralph Mather of Middle Hulton is probably another.
1724 Anna Garnet Ann's father may have been Isaac Garnet and wife (b.1688), but unsure if this is the correct wife of Ralph as she was married 3 years after the birth of James. 1748 Martha Mather On one record, recorded as sister of James, but on two other records, recorded as daughter of Ann Garnet Mather.

24 May 1768, Martha Mather probably married Thomas Bradley at St Mary's, Deane

10 Feb 1828 married James Grundy, and then continued to live with father at Mather's fold, Little Hulton in 1841.  Betty named her first son Ellis after her father.

In 1841, James and Betty (both 30) were at Mather Fold, Little Hulton with Ellis (10), James (8), John 3) and Ann (8mo).  Also Moses Mather (65) and Moses Mather (15).

In 1851, James and Elizabeth were publicans and had (and  were living at) the Railway Tavern, Green Lane, Worsley.  By 1861, then had moved to the Shaving Lane Public House is Worsley (then publican and farmer).

Having the only early Mather headstone he was probably an important man, and also has strong connections to Liverpool where all 4 children were baptised.

John Mort (son) and Thomas Mather of Middle Hulton were the executors of Robert Mort (a tanner) will of 1728.

Either Thomas and Alice didnt have children, or they had Daniel, Thomas, William and Elizabeth (1706 - 1712), all baptised at St Nicholas, Liverpool.  There are no known Thomas and Alice marriages at Liverpool (only one other in Warrington in 1701). However we know they married and later were buried at St Mary's Deane.

Probably as mother (and borthers and sister) survived, Gabried was about 35 to 45 when he died, and this sons had not married (as no grandghildren are mentioned in his will).
D. >1604 Margaret Howell Margaret, and her father John Howell are refered to in Gabriel's will. ~1590 Henry Mather 1723 Jacob Mather Jacob had a sister Elizabeth, born 1730. 1717 Thomas Mather Thomas may have married Mary and was a clay potter in Prescott before he moved to Tong. 1689 Henry Mather Henry may have been married before Jane (in 1714), as Ralph baptised in 1709.

Of Goldborne (near Lowton) when Married Margret and also when Ralph Mather baptised in 1709 as Ashton Chapel.

1715 Henry Mather Henry son of Henry & Jame Mather of Tong 1769 - 1835 James Mather 66 66 James was the son of another James from Middle Hulton, but who was this James?  There are no other childrens baptisms at Deane, of James Mather.  There are baptisms at Leigh of James (& Sarah) in 1767,69,72,73,74,75 but these must be another as they overlap our James baptised in 1769.  Likewise James and Mary of Radcliffe with baptisms 1766 and 1769 are another. ~1688 Margret Pimley Of Goldborne (near Lowton) when Married and also when Ralph Mather baptised in 1709. 1703 Mary Mather Mary deughter of Henry Mather baptised as St Thomas Ashton (very close to Goldbourn) so possibly same Thomas (but would be quite young), or at least same family. 1707 Alice Mather 1748 - 1829 Ann Mather 80 80 1743 - 1827 Daniel Stones 84 84 1740 - 1740 Thomas Mather This Thomas must have died an infant, as another Thomas was baptised a few years later. 1743 - 1744 Samuel Mather 1 1 This cant be the Samuel Mather, widower, who married Mary Yates in 1756 as he would be too far young.

There are no Deant baptism records for children of Samule Mather.  Samuel died in 1744.
1751 Betty Mather 1756 - 1800 Harry Mather 44 44 Harry's baptism is for Middle Hulton, wheras all the other children are Little Hulton. 1757 - 1829 Noah Mather 72 72 Noan and Mary lived in Little Hulton, using Peel Chapel (Deane) for their family baptisms.  They may have started at Middle Hulton where John, their first child is recorded. 1715 John Mather Peter's baptism shows the father as John of Hulton. All the other children are shows as from "Little Hulton" except for Harry which is Middle Hulton.

There may be two families living together.

James lead a double life, a bigamist with two families.  First he married Janet. After 1888 he started a family with a younger Mary Ann Ashall and between 1895 and 1909 had 5 more children by her.  Interestingly, both partnerships had a daughter Agnes (his mother's name).

In 1880, James, 20, Engineer, of 6 Radle Street, Pendleton, son of Thomas Tonge a fireman married Janet Hepburn (Scottish), daughter of Daniel, a Dyer.

Between 1881 and 1888, James and Janet had Agnes (who died), Margaret and James.  The family split up and Janet went off to live with her brother.

In 1891, James, a coal miner (born Pendleton, aged 30), is boarding with Samuel and Jane Cook (and their two infants) at St. Helens.

In 1901, James and Mary Ann are at "Miners Back Cottages", Newton in Makerfield.

Sometime after 1901, James and Mary Ann split up when Mary Ann found out about James's other family.  By 1911 they were well seperated!

In 1911, James Mather (48) and his son James (10) were boarding with the Twist family in Bettys, Carmarthenshire, both Surface Banksmen working at the local Colliery.

In 1937, James was a "Tonge" again, living in Salford, born 13-June-1860, a retired miner, and widow.

In 1943, James died in a poor house in Manchester and was buried in a communal poor grave. The death has him as James Mather "otherwise" Tonge.
1862 - 1928 Janet Hepburn 66 66 In 1891, Janet Tonge (27) was living with her brother William Hepburn, a coal miner (both from Scotland). 1881 - 1881 Agnes Tonge 1886 - 1959 Margaret Tonge 73 73 In 1891, Margaret Mather (aged 3) was with her grandmother Ann Howill (63)  1888 - 1917 James Tonge 29 29 In 1891, James Tonge, aged 2, and sister Margaret were with their mother Janet (and her brother)

Their son George went on to marry Dorris Halliwell. He died in Rochdale in 1997.
1856 - 1903 William McMellon 47 47 1878 Annie McMellon 1879 Mary McMellon 1882 - 1899 William McMellon 17 17 1885 Eva McMellon 1891 Jane McMellon 1855 - 1913 Alice Rylands 58 58 1900 Anges Smith <unknown> 1906 Frank Mather 1897 - 1897 Charles Herbert Mather 1848 - 1931 Betty Grundy 83 83 Betty's parents were John and Jane Grundy.  Andrew and Betty were living with them in 1871 after they married 1839 - 1920 Thomas Tonge 81 81 Thomas was an illegitimate son.  He had no father named on his marriage, but was probably the son of Ellen Tonge (b.1810), and had three older brothers Allin, Ralph and Joseph.. 1842 - 1865 Agnes Wane 23 23 1888 Helena Brown After James died in the war, Ellen married James E Chadwick in 1931 1757 Dinah Mather 1700 - 1749 Margaret Green 48 48 Margaret was the daughter of Joseph or Adam Green of Leigh, (so born 1698 or 1700) 1735 - 1796 Abigale Mather 60 60 Abigail was daughter of Ralph, but the Father or Son?

17 April 1759, Abigail Mather married John Kay, both of the parish of Deane.

Abigail Mather, daughter of Ralph Kay of Great Bolton was buried 7 Nov 1808.  Is this her?  Well in 1759, Abigail Mather married Ralph Kay, and Abigail Kay, widow of Shackerlay  died Feb 1796 and was buried at Deane.
1733 Joseph Mather 1730 Henry Mather 1726 Alice Mather 1738 Adam Mather 1755 Hannah Mather 1759 - 1759 William Mather 1724 Jacob (James) Mather James or Jacob (Jacobus) son of Ralph Mather of Over Hulton, webster ~1725 - 1801 Ralph Mather 76 76 In 1696, the first Inn in the township of Shakerley was "Mather's Inn". The innkeeper was William Mather.  Perhaps this William was Ralph's father. 1806 Elizabeth Mather 1807 - 1864 Ann Stones 57 57 Ann was the daughter of Simon Stones, a weaver 1809 - 1877 Joshua Grundy 68 68 Between 1844 and 1850, Betsey, William, Mary and Ellen Grundy were born at Little Hulton, with mother's maiden name MATHER.

In 1851, Joshua Grundy (42) was head, unmarried, living with Betty Mather (36, servant) and her 6 "Mather" children, the youngest being Ellen Mather, aged 1 in Little Hulton.

In 1861, Joshua Grundy was 52, still with Ann Mather and her children, but now the married name is Thornby.  Johsua Mather (21), Mary Grundy (14), Ellen Grundy (11), and 5 other children are all now named Thornby.

Betsey and William Grundy are missing.  Betsey and possibly Thomas are children of another family
1835 Ann Mather In 1841, Ann was 6

In 1851, Ann was 15 and a dressmaker, a "lodger" with her mother Betty and other siblings.  Joshua Grundy was head, a carter for hire.

In 1853 when she married, Ann was the daughter of Joshua Mather, a Carter.  However, this was Josiah Grundy, as her mother Betty never merried him.
1838 Thomas Mather Thomas was not with his mother Betty in 1841 although baptised son of Betty in 1838.

Thomas was 12 in 1851 with Betty and siblings at Little Hulton
1840 Joshua (Joseph) Mather In 1841, listed as Joseph, aged 11mo at Little Hulton with mother Betty (25)

Birth registered as James Mather, and living with mother Betty Mather in 1851
1842 - 1858 Sarah Mather 15 15 1847 Mary Grundy Mary and Ellen's births were registered as Grundy, but named Mather and living with unmarried mother Betty Mather in 1851.  By 1861, the same group were now all "Thornly" 1850 Ellen Grundy Mary and Ellen's births were registered as Grundy, but names Mather and living with unmarried mother Betty Mather in 1851.  By 1861, the same group were now all "Thornly" 1851 Alice Mather 1853 Martha Mather 1854 Robert Mather 1856 William Mather 1859 Sarah Jane Mather 1815 - 1878 Betty Mather 63 63 Betty was the daughter of James Thornley, the illegitimate son of Ellis Mather. This caused confusion as to what her name should be.  She was brought up as a "Mather", and used that name for the 1851 census and recording her childrens births, later changed to use the name "Thornley" after 1859 and on the 1861 census.

In 1841, Betty Mather (25) was in Little Hulton with Ann (6), James (4) and Joseph (11 months).

In 1851, Joshua Grundy (head, 42) was with Betty Mather (36, Servant) and 6 children shown as lodgers at Dunkirk, Hittle Hulton:  Ann (15), Thomas (12), Joshua (10), Sarah (8), Mary (3) and Ellen Mather (1), all born Little Hulton.

In 1861, Betty was named Betty Thornby and all the children were named Thornby, not Mather or Grundy.  However, all births between 1851 and 1861 are mother (and father) named Mather, so all are illegitimate, probably Joshua Grundy's who Betty is still living with.

In 1871, Betty (52) is now named Betty Thomley.  She is still with her 5 youngest: Mailce (19), Martha (18), Robert (16), William (14) and Sarah Jane (12).

Betty died, May 1878, aged 63 and buried as Joshua Grundy's wife in the same grave.

1786 William Stones 1832 William Ashton In 1847, John Ashton (a possible brother) married Mary Mather, daughter of Henry, also at Dean.  This Mary died in Little Hulton 1848, soon after the birth of her daughter Hannah (so all Ashton+Mather Births in Little hulton are probably correct)

In 1853, William was 21, a brick layer when he married Ann Mather.

In 1861, William and Ann (both 26) were at Dunkirk, Little Hulton with James (7), Elizabeth (3) and Alice (1).

In 1871, William and Ann Ashton (both 37) were at Dunkirk, Little Hulton with 8 children.  Jacob, Ellen and Joseph where not Ann's.

In 1848, Mary had a daughter Hannah Ashton.  The child survived, but Mary died just 18y old.  Its likely Hannah was brought up by her grand-parents.
1864 Jacob Ashton 1866 Ellen Ashton 1870 Joseph Ashton 1803 - 1864 Henry Mather 61 61 Henry is a possible son of John and Matty, born Atherton 25 Feb 1804, or he more likely the bastard child of Alice Mather of Little Hulton, baptised 8 March 1803.  Alice maried James Topping the following month.

Henry recorded his place of birth as Little Hulton, which is where he was in 1851 and 1861, but in 1841 was a Coal Minor at Pendleton Street, Pendleton, Eccles.

The Henry from Windle, St Helens is another who died 13 Mar 1839, aged 36.  There another Henry from Eccleston, Wigan who died 29 Dec 1850, aged 47, so all three born about 1803.

There only appears to be one marriage between a John Thornley and Ann, to the family at Little Lever is likely to
be them.

25 Sep 1754, John Thornley married Ann Mather at Deane St Mary.

8 Mar 1791, Betty may have married John Isherwood at Deane and moved to Quarlton.  John (a weaver and pauper) and Betty had a son James baptised 16 April 1791 at Turton.

1807 & 1810, daughters Alice and Susan were born at Tottington and baptised at St Ann's, Turton. This Betty (another Betty and John family of Bury) is buried at Hawkshaw (2 miles NW of Tottington).

In 1853, James Mather was a soldier when son Thomas married.
1841 Betsy Mather Betsy, daughter of Hugh Mather a Joiner of Farnsworth married Moses Farnworth in 1864 1804 John Lever John and Betty had all their children baptised at Bolton St Peter.  There must be another John and Betty Lever family in Bolton, as there is also a baptism for Martha in 1825, just 6 months after James.

The 1837 BMD birth record (not GRO) for Mary Lever, shows the MMN is MATHER.

In 1841, John and Betty (37 & 38) were a Joiner's Square, Great Bolton with James (16), Sarah (13), Wiliam (9), Charlotte (6) and Mary (3) .

Although in 1844, Lucy Ann's birth is registered with MMN = MATHER, Ann Mather was a widow when she married Edmund.  For their son Edmund, the MMN = Langshaw.
1838 William Grundy 1834 Mary Grundy Mary may be adopted (or may be Elizabeth Clare, Edmund's illegitimate daughter).  Unlike Edmund, born the same year, she was not baptised.  There is no birth registration for a twin, so must have another mother. 1841 Edmund Grundy 1834 Elizabeth Clare [Child] of Edmund Grundy, Reputed Father & Mary Clare
1765 Katharine Mather 14 June 1796, Catharine married James Boardman, a Soldier at Bolton St Peter. This may be Catherine b.1773, daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth (TBC). ~1660 Sarah Eddows 1745 Thomas Mather 20 Nov 1764, Thomas married Betty Flitcroft at Deane.  Their first two children were Catherine and John, names after Thomas's closes two siblings.

There is another Thomas Mather and Margaret Barlow marriage 5 Nov 1765.  This must be another Thomas as Catherine Mather was baptised in June before this November 1765 marriage.

The 1777 baptism of daughter Mary show that Thomas was a weaver of Little Hulton.
