Amelia was born in 1840 in Halliwell.¹ Amelia's father was John Wood and her mother was Martha Singleton. Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Wood and Susan (Susy) Livesey; her maternal grandparents were James Singleton and Alice Greenhalgh. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Thomas, John, Joseph, Mary and Hannah. She was the second oldest of the seven children.
