Joseph was born in 1850 in Sharples.¹ Joseph's father was John Wood and his mother was Martha Singleton. His paternal grandparents were Isaac Wood and Susan (Susy) Livesey; his maternal grandparents were James Singleton and Alice Greenhalgh. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, John, Amelia, Mary and Hannah. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
