Jane was born in 1816 in Manchester and her baptism took place on June 2nd, 1816 at Manchester Cathedral.¹

Jane's father was Abraham Mather and her mother was Margaret Liddle. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret (Peggy) Ashworth. She had a sister named Sarah. She was the older of the two children.
