Alice was born in 1760 in Haslingden and her baptism took place there in 1760.1  Alice's father was James Mather and her mother was Alice Cowp.  Her paternal grandparents were John (Old Hatter) Mather and Martha Mather. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Mary and Martha. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Thomas, Henry and Mary.
