Mary was born in 1752 in Haslingden and her baptism took place there on August 23rd, 1752.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Alice Cowp.  Her paternal grandparents were John (Old Hatter) Mather and Martha Mather. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Martha and Alice. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Thomas, Henry and Mary.
