John was born in 1797 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on October 1st, 1797 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was James Singleton and his mother was Alice Greenhalgh. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Amelia, James, Alice, Elizabeth, Sarah and Martha.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
