Samuel was born in 1840 in Harwood and his baptism took place on October 11th, 1840 in Bolton.1  Samuel's father was Joseph Ramsden and his mother was Martha Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were William Haslam and Ann Roscoe. He had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, Thomas, William, Joseph, John and Priscilla.  He was the second youngest of the eight known children.
