Thomas was born in 1828 in Tonge-with-Haulgh.1   Thomas' father was Joseph Ramsden and his mother was Martha Haslam. He had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, William, Joseph, Samuel, John and Priscilla.  He was the third oldest of the eight known children.
