William's father was Joseph Ramsden and his mother was Martha Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were William Haslam and Ann Roscoe. He had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, John and Priscilla.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight known children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1891.

‌William and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on December 5th, 1853 at St. Peter's (Bolton).²   They had three sons and four daughters, named Thomas, William, Samuel, Martha, Mary, Jane and Mary.
