James' father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Ashworth.  His paternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Anne Barns. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Abraham, Henry, Betty, Anne and Nancy.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
