John was born in 1846 in Haslingden.1  John's father was John Storey and his mother was Sarah Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Margaret Liddle. He had a brother and two sisters, named Nicholas, Mally and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
