Martha was born in 1856 in Astley Bridge.1  Martha's father was William Ramsden and her mother was Elizabeth Swinby.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Ramsden and Martha Haslam. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Samuel, Mary, Jane and Mary.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
