Charles was born on May 28th, 1832 in Turton and his baptism took place on March 31st, 1833 at Walmsley Presbyterian.¹

Charles' father was Henry Mather and his mother was Mary Chadwick. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret (Peggy) Ashworth. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, William, Henry and Caroline. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 1 in April 1834 in Turton. His burial was on April 24th, 1834 in Turton.²
