John was born in 1822 in Bury and his baptism took place on July 8th, 1823 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1  John's father was William Wood and his mother was Betty Hamer.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Wood and Susan (Susy) Livesey. He had three sisters named Ann, Sarah and Rachel.  He was the oldest of the four children.
