Richard and Peter are most probably brothers, as both families baptisms are listed on the first page of the Walmsley Chapel baptism book.  One Peter's baptism record suggest they may from Hulton (Deane), and sons of John Mather, although it is more likely this is another Peter and they are from Turton and their records are lost!

Another possibility is that Richard is the son of Richard Mather and Susan Smith who married at Manchester 1 Feb  1732. This would explain Richard's daughter Susan (i.e. named after her grandmother).

Richard was of this Parish (Bolton), and a weaver.  He was probably about 24 when he married Ann, which was almost certainly his first marriage (as there are no earlier marriages in Bolton for a Richard Mather).  A Turton burial in 1826 for Richard, aged 89 supports this.

Another likely possibility is that he is from Warrington, son of John a Butcher, and Ellen.  This family also had a Peter, and Richard (and Isaac) are missing from the Warrington records.  Peter stayed in Warrington as a Tobacconist, so they are not the brothers.  His other siblings all remained in Warrington and became butchers.  First son Isaac would be named after his younger brother.

Richard and Ann already had Isaac, and James was on the way when they married on 6 April 1761.  Isaac and Susanna were baptised at Bank Street Unitarian, but Isaac had missed his baptism.  They changed to Walmsley Presbyterian (perhaps they were not known there), and had Isaac baptised out of order, followed by the other children in the correct order.

The first children were baptised at Bank Street Unitarian and then after 1763 at Walmsley Presbyterian.

25 May 1826, Richard died in the Turton Workhouse, aged 89.
~1740 - ~1805 Peter Mather 65 65 WARNING: Parent are not confirmed, and the Peter from Warrington, son of John a butcher is another Peter, a tobacconist (like his uncle).

There are only 3 Bolton marriages for a Peter Mather, and two of these are a few years appart, suggesting Peter was widowed and married twice.  However, the marriage to Betty Mayo is believed to be another Peter Mather from Hulton.

The family seem to have travelled a bit:  Ellen baptised 1771 at Bank Street, Thomas I was baptised 1774 at Walmsley, Thomas II was baptised 1777 in Blackburn, Peter 1783 at Horwich, and John 1788 at Rivington.  All records show abode as Great Bolton, so it seems they moved to different independant chapels for the baptisms, rather than be moving home, which must be difficult for a hand-loom weaver.

James Mather was witness at Peter's marriage. This may have been his brother.  Richard and Ann's children are also listed on the same non-conformist register, so it is likely Peter had a brother Richard.
1786 - 1853 Thomas Mather 67 67 Thomas, son of Arthur and Hannah Bennet his wife.

In 1841, Thomas was a Smith (i.e. Blacksmith)

From 1734 to 1757, John and Ellen had 11 children, all with baptism records showing John a Butcher.

In 1768, Thomas, butcher died, recorded aged 53 (should be 55).  A year later his son Thomas also died.
1714 - 1780 Ellen Blinstone 66 66 1737 - 1769 Thomas Mather 31 31 Thomas died just after his father, aged 31.

He was buried at St Elphin, Warrington, aged 31, son of Ellen Mather Widow (so unmarried).
1740 - 1835 Margaret Mather 95 95 24 Feb 1757, Margaret possibly married John Johnson, both of Warrington by licence.  However she was quite young.

1753 Ellen Mather Ellen may have had an illegitimate child, John baptised at Burtonwood in 1769 (who later became a butcher), and later Isaac, baptised at Warrington 9 Jan 1780.  1769 John Mather John a base son of Ellen Mather of Burtenwood, baptised 1769.  It was his cousin John, son of and Margaret and John who was a butcher, born 1764.

~1770 Ellen Cropper (Dierden) 1770 marriage records to John show Eileen Cropper, but Geneanet shows Eileen Dierden !  Her death in Jan 1800 may be correct (tbc).  Ellen Dierden married a John Mather at Winwick 12 Sep 1785 1791 - 1868 Margaret Mather 76 76 Margaret may have married Thomas Abraham (b.1796) 1793 - 1800 Peter Mather 6 6 1795 - 1796 Robert Mather 5m 5m 1796 - 1838 John Mather 42 42

11 Apr 1819, Thomas married Hannah Molyneux.  Thomas died 3 years later.

The Thomas Mather that married Hannah Penketh from Tranmere 8 Oct 1799 is another born about 1777.  In 1841, that Thomas and Hannah (64 & 60) were living at Church Street, Warrington with Hannah (28), Esther (26), Jane (24) and Elizabeth (21).

1760 - 1786 Alice Mather 26 26 WARNING: There was another Alice Mather born in 1760, Baptised 29 Jun 1760 at Warrington, daughter of Josph a gardiner and Margery.

The only Alice Mather marriage at Warrington is 23 Oct 1799 to James Rowston (and then another in 1810).  It appears Alice remained a spinster.

In July 1876, the death record confirms Alice died a spinster, aged 26.

19 Oct 1788, The best marriage match is to Thomas Bennett at Warrington.

It is not clear who Mary married, but reasonable to assume she didn't die an infant.

In 1861, although his mother Mary was a widow and unmarried, William had 4 more younger siblings.
1819 Thomas Mather 1823 - 1857 Samuel Mather 34 34 In 1843, Samuel Mather son of Peter and Margaret married Martha Stanley (Stanway) at Grappenhall, St Wilfrid, Warrington.

In 1841, there was a Samuel Mather (17) at Padgate, Rixton living with likely parents and farmers John and Mary (both 40) and several other siblings.  Therefore the Samuel at Rixton in 1851 is likely the wrong person.

11 Oct 1841 Samuel Mather, minor, a soap boiler of Parr, son of Peter a farrier married Sarah Goulding at  St Luke (formerly St Wilfrid), Farnworth (Widnes), Lancashire.  (Brother Peter's 1840 marriage also shows his father Peter a Farrier, and Peter a Soap Cutter)

27 Sep 1820, Sarah wife of Thomas Caldwell was buried at Witton-cum-Twambrooks, Cheshire, aged 54. A perfect days match, but this was Sarah Bagaley, who married Thomas in 15 Nov 1792 at Witton-cum-Twambrooks,
1770 - 1835 Samuel Mather 65 65 6 Jan 1791, Saamuel Mather, butcher (like his father) married Ellen Boardman, both from Liverpool at Liverpool St Nicholas.

They must have continued Samuel's Butcher Business as in 1795, Sarah daughter of Samuel a Butcher was born in Warrington.

1836, Samuel Mather of Garden Row, Warrington died, aged 65.
1754 - 1811 Thomas Caldwell 57 57 10 Aug 1784, Thomas Caldwell married Sarah Mather at Warrington by Banns.  This is the only marriage to a Sarah, so the burial of Ann at St Elphin in 1792, aged 12 and Mary in 1801, aged 1 day must be theirs, even though there are no baptisms.  The records do however, show Thomas is a farmer.

The burial record shows Thomas was born about 1766, so older than Sarah.  Sarah is therefore likely to have remarried.
1771 - 1855 Ellen Boardman 84 84 In 1841, Ellen Mather (70, F.S.), living with Robert Boardman (assumed brother) and William Hill (60, a Groom) at Warrington
