William was born on September 23rd, 1793 in Prescot and his baptism took place there on October 6th, 1793.1  William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Garswood.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Thompson. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Ralph, Thomas, William, William, Margaret, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, Ellen and Mary.

‌William and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on January 19th, 1817 at St. Luke (Farnworth) by minister William Thompson and witnessed by Thomas Mercer & Peter Shaw.3  They had a son and a daughter, named Joseph and Elizabeth.  There are possibly more children.
