William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Garswood.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Thompson. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Ralph, Thomas, William, William, Margaret, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, Ellen and Mary.  He died at the age of 3 in September 1785 in Prescot.  He was buried on September 15th, 1785 in Prescot.²
