William was born on March 11th, 1767 in Prescot and his baptism took place there on April 1st, 1767.1  William's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Ann Thompson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Ralph, Ellen, Mary, Elizabeth, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He had a half-sibling of unknown gender named <child>.

‌William and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on June 2nd, 1788 in Prescot by Vicar S Sewell and witnessed by Joseph Ellison & Jonathan Redman.1
