Ellen's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Ann Thompson. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Ralph, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the eight children. He had a half-sibling of unknown gender named <child>.
