Joseph's father was Alfred Farnworth and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Alfred, George, Sarah, Ellen, Ellen, Alice and Esther.  He was the third youngest of the nine known children.  He died at the age of 1 in September 1878 in Farnworth.²
