Alfred was born in March 1876 in Farnworth.1  Alfred's father was Alfred Farnworth and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, George, Sarah, Ellen, Ellen, Alice and Esther.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine known children.
