Ellen was born in 1871 in Bolton.1  Ellen's father was Alfred Farnworth and her mother was Alice Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Alfred, Joseph, George, Sarah, Ellen, Alice and Esther.  She was the third oldest of the nine known children.
