Sarah was born in June 1864 in Bolton.1  Sarah's father was Alfred Farnworth and her mother was Alice Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Alfred, Joseph, George, Ellen, Ellen, Alice and Esther.  She was the oldest of the nine known children.
