Alice was born in June 1840 in Burnley.1  Alice's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Warburton.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. She had six brothers and six sisters, named James, Thomas, William, (John), George, Walter, Ellen, Mary, Jane, Sarah, Mary and Agnes.  She was the third oldest of the thirteen children.
