George was born in June 1858 in Bolton and his baptism took place on January 23rd, 1859 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  George's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Warburton.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named James, Thomas, William, (John), Walter, Ellen, Mary, Alice, Jane, Sarah, Mary and Agnes.  He was the second youngest of the thirteen children.
