James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Warburton. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, William, (John), George, Walter, Ellen, Mary, Alice, Jane, Sarah, Mary and Agnes. He was the seventh oldest of the thirteen children. He died at the age of 58 on April 13th, 1906 in New York.²
