(John) was born in March 1856 in Bolton.1  (John)'s father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Warburton.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named James, Thomas, William, George, Walter, Ellen, Mary, Alice, Jane, Sarah, Mary and Agnes.  He was the third youngest of the thirteen children.
