Sarah was born in 1844 in Burnley and her baptism took place there on August 25th, 1844.1 2  Sarah's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Warburton.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. She had six brothers and six sisters, named James, Thomas, William, (John), George, Walter, Ellen, Mary, Alice, Jane, Mary and Agnes.  She was the fifth oldest of the thirteen children.
